October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Every October the United States celebrates women affected by breast cancer. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual campaign dedicated to increasing awareness and support of this common disease. Tyler Wellcare stands behind women in the Tyler, Texas area who have beat the disease or are currently fighting, as well as all of their family and friends. If you are above the age of 40 years and have not discussed a mammogram appointment for this year, please call your physician today. A mammogram is a critical aspect of women’s health.
Facts during Breast Cancer Awareness Month
- In the United States, more than 200,000 women are diagnosed with the disease each year
- More than 40,000 women die from breast cancer annually
- Less than 1% of all cases are reported in men
- The majority of cases are diagnosed in women over 50 years
- About 10% of cases are found in women younger than 45 years
Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in American women. Visiting with a women’s health specialist and getting a mammogram regularly is the best way to lower the risk of dying from the disease. Women between the ages of 40-49 years are encouraged to speak with their doctor about the appropriate time to start screening. Women over the age of 50 years are recommended to have a mammogram screening every 1-2 years. A physician will determine the ideal time frame based on age, genetics and other risk factors.
Mammograms are an Important Aspect of Women’s Health
A mammogram, also known as mammography, is an x-ray picture of the breast. They are performed as part of an annual or semi-annual women’s health appointment in order to check for breast cancer in women who show no signs or symptoms.
A ‘screening mammogram’ is used to detect tumors that cannot be felt during a self-breast examination. A ‘diagnostic mammogram’ is used to check for breast cancer after a lump or other symptom has been detected. Diagnostic mammograms take longer to perform and involve higher amounts of radiation because more than 2 x-ray images are needed to obtain views of the breast from multiple angles.
How can You Become Involved?
The very first item we encourage all women to do during Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to schedule a mammogram, if necessary. If you have already completed your mammogram, that is great! We now encourage you to spread the message to family and friends during a lunch, on social media or via email.
There are also various events held throughout the East Texas area each October to help bring awareness. Gather up a group of friends and join a walk/run or other community event.
The team at Tyler Wellcare encourages all women to become involved in the fight during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This aspect of women’s health is a serious issue and we need all Tyler, Texas women to help spread awareness and support.
